Harley: CAROL'S HEALTH UPDATE AS OF 2-15-2005
HEALTH HISTORY: Hello to all of you in the audience tonight. As you all may know, I was diagnosed with a rare form of Leukemia - Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia (CML) in April 2004. This is best described as cancer of the bone marrow or blood. I do not have insurance with prescription coverage (I have only Medicare) and discovered that the meds used to treat the symptoms of CML, are very costly - and, right out of my pocket. I am, however, very grateful for this miracle drug, Gleevec, as it will allow me to hopefully live a long, normal life. A number of fundraisers have been launched by many of my friends in the bluegrass and folk music world as well as individual donors at our live shows and through our Leukemia Fund PO Box in Eugene, OR. So far, since July 2004, we have raised, $31,210.96. I want to thank each and every person who has given money to my Fund. Our goal is $300,000 to be raised by May 2006.

Harley: "A Personal Message From Carol..."
Misty River has been blessed with much support and friendship from all of you over the past several years. I, personally, feel a very strong connection with many of you that for me goes beyond the normal fan / performer relationship. So, in that spirit, I want to take this opportunity to give you the "inside skinny" on some developments in my life and ask you all for a little extra personal support and positive energy ....maybe even a few prayers from those of you that are so inclined!

Some of you may have heard (or noticed?) that I am a little "off" these days. I have recently been diagnosed with Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia (CML) and have begun a treatment regimen that holds great promise but which, I'm discovering(!), can be a little tough to handle from time to time. These days CML is increasingly treatable, so I'm very hopeful. I'm also determined to carry on with my life.

In particular I'm determined (with my doctor's permission and encouragement) to continue those activities in my life that bring me the most joy. It goes without saying, of course, that Misty River is right up there at the top of that list!

I'm looking forward to Misty River's scheduled performances over the next many months and can't wait to see all your smiling faces!

Love, Carol

Harley: Carol's Leukemia Story & Diary
CAROL’S CML STORY & DIARY
APRIL 8, 2004

The Bad News – I have been diagnosed with Leukemia. Yes, a rare form of cancer called Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia or CML for short. Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia is an uncommon blood cancer that originates in the bone marrow and is characterized by an overabundance of white blood cells affecting 40,000 people in the United States each year.

It was discovered Thursday, March 25, 2004 at my regular yearly checkup with my doctor here in Vancouver, WA. My Doctor called me a few hours after my exam and said that my blood smear came back abnormal. Yeah, like 165,000 white blood cell count!! Not good as normal is 4,000 – 7,000. She and an oncologist think it is CML. They want me to have a bone marrow biopsy immediately. So, I had a biopsy a few days later and sure enough the final diagnosis – CML.
